Abstract

During the Miocene, the Central Luconia Province offshore Sarawak became an area of carbonate production and deposition characterised by the extensive development of buildups. These buildups are of considerable size and some 200 have been seismically mapped. An extensive drilling programme over the last decade revealed that the carbonates can be subdivided into four basic facies types which reflect specific ecological and bathymetrical .conditions. Although some intervals suffered compaction during subsequent burial, the majority of the carbonates have preserved excellent secondary porosity. Fresh water leaching during stages of emergence and dolomitisation were the major diagenetic events leading to the overall good reservoir rock qualities of the Central Luconia carbonate buildups.
