Abstract

The arcuate structure of the northeastern Indonesian Archipelago linking the Philippines and Papua New Guinea-Solomon Islands, respectively, to the north and east, comprises volcanic and non-volcanic island arcs. In the volcanic island arcs acid and intermediate plutonic rocks are structurally related to hypabyssal and volcanic rocks, and form a distinct volcano-plutonic assemblage. In the non-volcanic island arcs ultrabasic and basic plutonic rocks are closely associated with basic effusives, and making up an ophiolite assemblage. The composition of these island arcs reflects different types of metallic mineral belts.
