Abstract

The behaviour associated with parturition of sambar deer (Cervus unicolor) was observed at a deer captive breeding center in Sungkai, Perak. Observations of the female prior to parturition and the actual birth process were made with the aid of 10 x 40 mm Minolta binoculars. Most of the parturition processes in sambar deer such as isolation from herd, rocking of body back and forth as well as licking of newborn were similar to other species of deer. The single newborn fawn was observed unspotted at birth.
