Abstract

Surveys on the status and distribution of otters were carried out in Pulau Pinang and Perlis, the 2 northern states of Peninsular Malaysia. Only 2 species of otters were found during the surveys. The smooth otters were more abundant in areas with large water bodies such as reservoir and lakes while the small-clawed otters were confined to small rivers and streams. However, both species were common in rice fields adjacent to mangroves along the coastal areas. Otter distribution in the study areas can be attributed to several factors like the availability of food, vegetation cover, level of human disturbance, and pollution.
