Abstract
Two-man-day samplings of butterflies within a 1 km² area in the Kuala Lompat sector of the reserve were conducted on four occassions. The specimen: species numbers successively accumulated through the four occasions were 55:37, 116:62, 159:76 and 218:92 respectively. With such results, the values of Shannon's species diversity index (H') were found to be 3.47, 3.91, 4.09 and 4.22 respectively. These (H') values were' significantly different (p<0.05) from one another. Such significant progression of high H' values indicate that the reserve harbours a high diversity of butterfly species. Many more butterfly species would have been recorded if sampling were continued over longer period of time. For this reserve, there is no previous checklist record of its butterfly species. Thus, all the 92 species found in this relatively short (8 man•day) survey would form the first checklist record for the reserve. Of these, Troides cuneifer paeninsulae (Pendlebury) and Prothoe franck unifonnis (Butler) has been marked as protected species, while Elymnia hypermnestra agina (Fruhstorfer) and Elymnias phantera panthera (Fabricius) are very rare species and hence most sought after by private collectors from overseas.
