Abstract

The total number of deer harvested in Peninsular Malaysia during the hunting seasons 1982-1985 were on the increasing trend (108 to 136 animals). However they were considered low compared to 74 animals harvested just in the State of Perak alone in 1976 (Khan 1976). This is most probably due to loss of their habitat. Most of the deer were found to be killed in the shrubs rather than in the primary and secondary forests. The sexes of deer harvested had no association with weather conditions. The equal ratio of sexes harvested in 1983 and 1984 and the decreasing trend in the percentage of pregnant females, 83.3% in 1982 to 12.5% in 1985 propose a close season should be declared again. However if the seasons still want to be continued, the hunting should be allowed for only male deer, hunting season shortened from 2 months to 1 month and the number of licences issued should have a limitation.
