Abstract

A preliminary study on food preference of the Aonyx cinerea and Lutra perspicillata was carried out in Tanjung Piandang, Perak. Fifty scats sample from each species were collected and analysed. Sump ponds from the study areas were drained to determine prey species density in the study area and to correlate between fish species density and food preference of both these otters in the study area. From the study, it was found that sepat siam formed the largest proportion of the prey population in the study area and this affected to some extent, the food preference of both otter species in the study area. Feeding behaviour of captive A. cinerea revealed this otter preferred prey items which have more meat like nabas testudineus. Other food items like molluscs, crustaceans and mammal species were also consumed, but these differ between both the otter species.
