Abstract

A study on the parental investment in small-clawed otter (Aonyx cinerea) was carried out at the Malacca Zoo. A total of 14 days of observation was conducted on a family comprising an adult male, two adult females and a newborn pup. The male contributed a substantial amount of time in nest maintenance while the females were responsible for grooming and training the newborn pup. The male otter also spent more time with the newborn compared to both the females. Parental care is evident in the group with the non-breeding female contributing in raising the young.
