Abstract

A total of 105 small mammals belonging to 9 species were captured at the study area of Ulu Gombak forest in Selangor Darul Ehsan. Among these, 30% of them were infested with ectoparasites. The ectoparasites identified comprised of 8 groups namely tbe mesostigmatid mites, larval trombiculid mites or chiggers, ticks, lice, fleas, listrophorids, myobiids and cheyletid mites. Mesostigmatid mites possessed the highest infestation of 22.6% and the lowest being 3.2% for the flea andcheyletid mites. The softfurred rat, Sundamys muelleri and the spiny-furred rat, Maxomys rajah were noted to harbour the maximum occurrence of the ectoparasites.
