Abstract

Seven sites at the Malaysia-Thailand, Malaysia-Indonesia and Malaysia-Brunei borders have been identified. Three of them are at the Malaysia-Thailand border. The Lanjak-Entimau Wildlife Sanctuary of Sarawak, Malaysia together with Bentuang-Kanmun Nature Reserve of Kalimantan, Indonesia has been agreed by both Malaysia and Indonesia as the first trans-boundary protected area in ASEAN. Masterplans are being drawn up with external assistance to co-ordinate the management of the area. Similar assistance is also needed to enable the other identified sites to be turned into trans-boundary protected areas. In addition to the ASEAN forum, the proposals should also be brought up to deliberate at the existing bilateral government forums where policies on international boundary matters could be resolved. In Malaysia where land is entirely a state government matter, it is important to assist the respective state governments in order for them to support and actively participate in the creation and planning of trans-boundary protected areas.
