Abstract

Creation of Protected Areas in Peninsular Malaysia is done at the initiation of the concerned state government through gazette notification. The Protected Areas in Peninsular Malaysia refers to Wildlife Reserves and National Parks created since 1903. The creation of Protected Areas is closely linked to the existence of suitable legislation on wildlife conservation and national parks. Interestingly, the trend on creation of Protected Areas also depended on whether the state or federal government enforces the particular legislation. As a result the creation of Protected Areas can be looked at chronologically. In the first period between 1902 to 1955 the Federated Malay-State had a common legislation and under it a total of 432,134 ha of Protected Areas were created. During this period too the state of Pahang., Terengganu and Ke1antan passed a similar legislation to create the Taman Negara National Park. In the second period between 1956 to 1972 all states had a common wildlife, conservation legislation and since this was also enforced by the states, an additional 76,511 ha of Protected Areas were created during this time. However, after 1972 with the Federal Government taking over from the states in the enforcement of the new wildlife legislation and its administration, no new Protected Areas have been created. However, some states have used alternative ways, like the formulation of state park legislation to create new protected areas. The continued maintenance of the Protected Areas actions as recommended in the National Policy of Biological Diversity have to be under taken.
