Abstract

This paper discusses the DWNP experience in breeding galliformes under captivity. Ten species of galliformes were bred in this programme with at least three (Great Argus, Malaysia Peacock Pheasant and Mountain Peacock Pheasant) showing very encouraging results while the Bulwer's Pheasant and Crested Argus showed no indication of breeding. With the exception of Crested Argus (without a female partner), the poor breeders are suspected to be due to incompatible partners, old age and!or unconducive captive environment. It is suggested that management problems should be looked into if captive breeding success is to be achieved or the facilities which had been specifically built for galliformes breeding will not yield the DWNP maximum benefit.
