Abstract

An account is given of the butterfly species composition and distribution in the Kuala Tahan and Gunung Tahan areas of Peninsular Malaysia's trl-state National Park, Taman Negara, on the Pahang, Terengganu and Kelantan border. A total of 248 species and 133 genera are recorded and a checklist of species is presented with their distributions. The composition of species is discussed with reference to the different types of habitats in the Park. Observations are made on the behaviour and distribution patterns of species of the Lycaenopsis group, Jamides and Nacaduba (Lycaenidae). The Gunung Tahan plateau (Padang) and adjoining mountain peaks and ridges are much richer in species than the habitat can logically support. The ecological role of these mountain ranges is discussed in relation to species propagation and dispersion.
