Abstract

The study was carried out to obtain the population estimates of the two species of swiftlets, i.e. the Edible-nest swiftlet (Collocalia fuciphaga) and the Black-nest swiftlet (Collocalia maxima) at Pulau Redang, Trengganu and Pulau Tinggi, Johor. Capture and recapture, and direct nest count methods were used during this study. At Pulau Redang, 655 to 1,035 Edible-nest swiftlets and 3,645 to 4,213 Black-nest swiftlets were estimated using the capture and recapture method. Through direct nest counts, 408 and 13 ,303 Edible•nest swiftlets and Black-nest swiftlets respectively were estimated. In lohor, direct nest count method showed that there were a pair of Edible-nest swiftlets and 160 black-nest swiftlets at Pulau Tinggi.
