Abstract

Field observations on the social behaviour of Tupaia glis were carried at Bukit Lanjan Forest Reserve, Selangor from January to December 1975. Observations were carried out by walking along forest trials. A total of 93 field trips with 49 encounters of these animals which comprised of 73.5% solitary and 26.5% social encounters involving either 2 or more animals. Among the solitary encounters, 77.8% were seen at ground levels and 22.2% above 1.5 m. The social behaviour of three social encounters revealed the male partners of each of these groups as the dominant hierarchy. Both the males and females in these social encounters displayed different signs and vocalisation in the form of threats, excitement, warnings, pleasurable emotion and territorial aggression. The observation on the copulation of a pair tree-shrews constituted the second record ever reported in its natural environment.
