Abstract

This paper gives an overview of the management of gaur (Bas gaurus hubbacki) captive breeding after 18 years of its establishment (1982-2000). The objective of the establishment was consistent with the conservation status (endangered) of the seladang that warranted ex-situ conservation to prevent its extinction. Captive breeding was carried out successfully and inbreeding was prevented. Out of 52 births, only 18 (35%) deaths occurred. Five (27%) of the deaths were caused by stress, during or after the animals were transported to different place. It is concluded that the establishment of the gaur captive-breeding project was justified and should be continued. A research project on re-introduction should be conducted before actual re-introduction commences.
