Abstract

The study was carried out from Pasir Petasih to Pasir Pulau Musang along Sungai Terengganu, Terengganu between 11 to 31 July 1994. It was carried out one month after the nesting period. A total of 30 locations of sandbanks were inspected, of which 16 were reported being visited by terrapins. The number of landing or nesting of terrapins were dependent on the physical factors (width and length) of the locations. These locations were favorable and not prevalent of shifting, thus the locations could be considered as possible positive nesting sites along Sungai Terengganu. It was recorded that 263 ± 43 females landed at these sites. The total number of eggs collected by the villagers was 2,396. Fourteen sandbanks (46.67%) were suitable for breeding of terrapins. Pasir Tirok/Telemong and Pasir Tirok / Serada are proposed as new terrapin' sanctuaries. The height of the sandbank was the only physical factor independently related to the possible nesting of terrapins along Sungai Terengganu.
