Abstract

A preliminary study of fruit flies was conducted at Hutan Simpan Sugut from August 2014 until January 2015. The objectives were to investigate the diversity of fruit flies (Diptera: Tephritidae) and to construct a set of pictorial identification key for species found at Hutan Simpan Sugut. 15 days of sampling with three different methods were applied; chemical attractants that using feromone which is Methyt Euganol (ME) and Cue Lure (CUE), manual catch and malaise trap. Each trap were left for 24 hours and the sample will be collected in the next day. A total of nine species of fruit flies was obtained. All of the fruit flies were from the same genus which is Bactrocera. The most abundance species is Bactrocera sp15 with 36.700% and followed by Bactrocera carambolae with 13.33% individual. The fruit flies diversity of Hutan Simpan Sugut was found high with the highest Shannon Diversity index (H':1.56g). A pictorial dichotomous key of Hutan Simpan Sugut can be used for next research purpose and can be upgraded from time to time especially in identifying fruit flies from Borneo.
